Meeting Nicki Minaj is an operation thats handled with military-like precision. Its 6:58 p.m. when I pull my car into the sprawling American Idol lot and 7:01 p.m. when I check in with Nickis publicist. Its 7:02 p.m. when I get the first update: "Nicki is en route," she says urgently. At 7:03 p.m. Im ushered to the entrance of the studio, where I see a petite blur of platinum blonde hair stride past, surrounded by a chattering crowd of hairstylists, makeup artists, assistants, and friends. They duck into a black Maybach. "Shes riding to her trailer," her publicist says, pointing to one of the six massive structures 20 feet away.

I am, to be frank, uncertain what to expect when interviewing a celebrity who rides a Maybach to a trailer ten steps away. But whatever preconceived notions I may have had of Nicki Minaj, none of them fit the woman I meet, whos curled up on an oversize couch in a vintage T-shirt and pink velour track bottoms, her tiny manicured feet tucked into plush Hello Kitty slippers that coordinate with the Hello Kitty figures dotted throughout her otherwise simple trailer. She is entirely sans makeup, with the exception of doll-like false lashes. "Do you want a slice of pizza?" she asks. "Its been a long day."

No stranger to working hard, Trinidad-born, Queens-raised Nicki took her first step toward stardom by self-publishing her songs online. Before long, she caught the eye (or, technically, the ear) of Lil Wayne, who signed her to his label in 2009. Just three years later she was called the most influential female rapper of all time by The New York Times. Her career has been a Technicolor-costumed ascentone she credits to a preternaturally strong sense of self that she developed during her teenage years. "Every time my parents fought, my mother would have us move and I would have to go to a new school, which meant Id have to face the task of making new friends," she recalls. "I dreaded it. I had butterflies in my stomach each time: Are people going to like or hate me? Will they talk about me?"

She grew a thick skin, she says, because she didnt have the choice not to. "I encountered jealous girls a lotit wasnt like I had nice clothes, so they couldnt be envious of that, but they were like, You shouldnt be that confident, " she reveals. "Sometimes, if I felt like there was a physical threat, I would call my older brother and say, Can you meet me after school because I dont know what might happen? Sometimes thered be a fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasnt going to be pushed around. What it came down to is that the bullies wanted me to bow down to them. And I just wouldnt."

Eventually, Nicki created her own strategy for dealing with haters: "I was a jokester. I let everything roll off my back," she says. "I always felt like I had other things going in my life outside of school, like church and extracurricularsI was even on the softball team," she adds with a laugh. When Nicki began freshman year at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, the famed New York City performing arts institution, things finally clicked into place. "It was the first time I felt like I really fit in. Everyone there was creative," she says. "For once, I didnt feel like there was something weird about me."

One things for sure, Nicki Minaj knows EXACTLY how to keep us on our toes. After the Head Barb teased the world on Valentines Day, when she posted a scenic photo of a pool and jacuzzi, with the caption "Wish you where here" on twitter, she later mentioned she would tweet a "bikini shot." Many fans called her bluff, and doubted she would deliver. Oh! Deliver she did! She sent the internet ablaze once she tweeted a steamy, seductive photo collage, of her sporting a hot neon green bikini in various playboy-esq poses.

The fun didnt stop there, you know the saying: "It aint NO fun if the (BARBZ) cant have some," so Nicki started a very contest to say the least. She beckoned all her sexy barbz to tweet her their best body shots, with the only requirements being, you had to be 18 & over and you had to hold a handwritten "Nicki," sign, you know, to weed out the potential "catfish." She promised to pick three lucky winners, who would receive $1,000 EACH! If thats not an incentive to get in shape, I dont know what is. As always, she kept her word, and this afternoon she revealed the three lucky winners who will receive the cash prize. What do you think Barbz? Are they hot, or what????

When most of America heard the news that Nicki Minaj was going to be a judge on this seasons American Idol, some were skeptical, "what does a rapper know about a singing competition?" They quipped. Some even speculated the animated rapper was chosen soley for shock value, a guarantee to gain publicity for the shows dwindling viewership. Fast forward a month into the 12th season, with the shows highest ratings yet, the naysayers have been forced to recant their opinions. Seems the folks at FOX knew exactly what they were doing. Not only is Nicki Minaj funny, she seems to be mirroring former Idol Judge Simon Cowell, giving frank, sometimes brutal but always honest solid advice that contestants and viewers can apply to real world situations.

Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone, recently penned an opt-ed article titled s the best of Simon and Paula in one candy-colored package. Where he posed the question "Why is Nicki Minaj the best judge American Idol has ever had?" Answering, he states: "Its deceptively simple: She is the only judge in Idol history who ever had the chance to see the show before she got famous. So she knows what its like to watch Idol as a fan Minaj comes off as sincere and devoid of bullshit, zeroing in on the right contestants. She seems like the smartest person in the room Minaj is the main reason Idol is kicking off its freshest season in years. She brings a whole new level of gung-ho dementia to the latest makeover." UH! DUhhh!!!!

Take for example, the curt idol contestant Matheus Fernandes (rewind a few weeks back Barbz), who continued to poke fun at his height (or lack thereof). Nicki, who refused to rsvp to his pity-party snapped "you were sort of making reference to your height. Sometimes things can go from being inspiring, to like you wanting a pity party, and once youre great, we dont even notice your height. You dont have to milk that ever again. Be you, be great, and just rest in your talent after today." Then, contestant Paul Jolley mentioned he was "nervous," before belting out a rendition of Carrie Underwoods "Blown Away. Nicki snapped back "just give us one minute of professionalism, Its one minute for you to come onstage and take that off of your face." Woah! Head BARB is definitely not into sugar-coating things. Which is a good, if not a great thingBut WE already knew that. Folks have to remember this is a competition, based on preparation, consistency, and talent, which Nicki has been consistently reminding the contestants, what we all know, but may have forgotten: "Hard work beats Talent when talent doesnt Work hard."

Back to Rob Sheffields articleHe goes on to say "Its Minaj who deserves all the credit for firing up the singers and revitalizing the format. She combines the best judging attributes of both Simon (sensible, hard to con, immune to sob stories) and Paula (unpredictable, silly voices).
